Activities

For an activity packed holiday in Ireland, East Cork is the place for you! While golfers and anglers will be in seventh heaven, there are countless other activities to keep all ages entertained. Enjoy the thrill of sailing or windsurfing on the Atlantic Ocean. Take a canoe trip up the river of time – the majestic Blackwater, or a Harbour or River Cruise. Travel cross country on an all terrain vehicle or take the four legged option on horseback. Go to an Irish greyhound racing track and flavour the thrill of the race. Try you hand at bowling, experience the ultimate Lazer Megazone or enjoy the wealth of other activities in one holiday village - for the rain never stops play in East Cork!

ANGLING East Cork has some of the best angling in Ireland with a wide variety of species to try for. The Youghal to Ballycotton area is one of the best known Shore Angling locations in the country. The River Blackwater is world renowned for its salmon fishing and Sea Angling boats are readily available for Reef, Shark or Wreck Fishing - no less than 11 Irish record fish have been taken from these waters in recent years!

Coarse and game anglers are also well catered for with numerous rivers flowing through the area and an aboundance of well stocked lakes. Of these, Ballyhonock Lake and Ballybutler Lake are the anglers’ favourites.

WATER SPORTS
Cork Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world, and boasts the worlds first Yacht Club. Maritime traditions in East Cork are strong and rowing races are a favourite pastime with the locals. Sailing, power boating, wind surfing and kayaking are all catered for. You can train to be a sailing instructor or charter a yacht - this sea farers paradise is haven for all water sport enthusiasts!

TENNIS
Tennis players are well catered for with tennis clubs in both Aghada, outside Midleton, and at the Rushbrook Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Cobh.

WALKS IN EAST CORK
East Cork is an ideal place for an energetic stroll or a gentle amble, be it through the peace and tranquillity of olden woodland, along a cliff walk on rugged headlands renowned for bird life, or on a sandy beach.

Several Walking Tours are available in East Cork. Take a historic walking tour of Cobh on the Titanic Trail, retracing points of interest relating to that tragic event, or discover the Olde World of Youghal with a guided walk though its narrow streets. Finally, you can experience the history and heritage of the unique Glanmire valley - through a beautiful wooded environment, taking in rivers, waterways and old industrial mills.

There are also several delightful woodland walks in East Cork. Take Rostellan Wood, a mixture of conifers and broadleaves. Rabbits, hares, foxes, badgers, red squirrels, stoats and a great variety of bird life can be seen here. On the other hand, a walk through the world renowned Fota Arboretum will open your eyes to unusual tree species such as a West Himalayan Fir which was planted here in 1847. Who knows, you might just meet an exotic visitor from the Wildlife Park as you ramble through these magnificent specimens!

Wonderful long sandy beaches are a feature of East Cork that entice all generations on a fine summer day. Even on a blustery autumn afternoon, a stroll along  a secluded beach, where farms overlook the shoreline, is sure to bring a glow to your cheeks. Four of these popular sandy beaches possess the Blue Flag for being a safe area to swim and for their excellent public amenities.

DRIVES in East Cork
Finally, the one activity that requires no physical exertion – motoring!  East Cork is an ideal base for exploring for the motor enthusiast. Not only for routes within the region, but as a base to venture further afield. Meander up the Blackwater Valley River Drive to Lismore, or view the spectacular Mahon Falls on the Comeragh Drive. Take a trip to Kinsale, visit Killarney via Mallow or Waterford for a day.
